“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”
“Serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace amid the storm.”
I challenge myself to find peace amidst the storm of feelings the US election has brought into the lives of all of us. Giving into, letting fear, anger, despair overcome us is not helpful or useful. Kabat-Zens encouragement that we learn to surf makes sense.
How do I remember to live a life of love and joy with lack of equality in our country? When basic human rights are taken from vulnerable people? How do I find peace when I know others know only misery, hopelessness and lack?
Carefully. Thoughtfully. By staying steady and not submitting to despair.
Remembering to love myself and to be kind and have compassion for myself and for all others will go a long way. My journey is to feel compassion for my own distress and balance generosity and compassion for all others. I am being challenged to listen to those with whom I do not agree. I am being offered an opportunity to find the grains of truth and hope in sounds and words and actions that are very different from mine. I am being given an opportunity to learn to surf even as I am very afraid of the water and do not trust I have the energy for the job.
Change. A tectonic shift. My very foundation is breaking open beneath me and I must find the resources to leap over the gap.

- I am going to treat myself to some chocolate. Seems appropriate for the time.
