Pleasure and Sorrow

A poem by Robert Browning

I walked a mile with pleasure
She chattered all the way
But left me none the wiser
For all she had to say.

I walked a mile with sorrow
And ne’er a word she said
But oh, the things I learned from her
When sorrow walked with me.

Thoughts:

I find the poem very moving and affirming and agree I learn a lot when feeling sad.  Equally I believe joy and pleasure and happiness and peace bring many needed gifts and I learn from my pleasure as well as my sadness. The job sure is tougher when it is done through sorrow, but maybe what I learn during times of sadness is deeper and more profound than I realize at the time. None the less, I vote for joy and pleasure every day. A good laugh solves many problems.

Gratitudes:

  • I am grateful for humour
  • I am grateful for the joy Aimee brings
  • I am grateful for music to sooth and hold me when sad and to celebrate with me when I am happy
  • I am grateful for a day today of not much happening and I can do each moment as I please
  • I am grateful for friends.

Hugs and love to you all. Nancy
